Self-Hosted Forum Appreciation Thread

Gotta say, I love this idea; way too much gets buried in random discord servers.

Absolutely! Makes it hard to search for problems and find solutions, and makes hard to just assemble a good collection of knowledge. Don't think I've ever seen a project that says "we offer support in our Discord server" and had my reaction be "oh good!" 😆

Self-hosting is letting forums make a comeback. Now all we need is functioning email without using a third party service...

This is a pipe dream ;-; Email is such a morass I don't think it can ever come back. You can self-host it if you make it your day job. painge

Not super uncommon to hear the claim that everything relying on Discord servers or Reddit threads is killing the internet, but it is a claim I fully agree with. I appreciate a good example of what the internet once was and this is one of them.

And hopefully what the internet might return to!

All the nostalgic internet stuff involved with this site is pretty enjoyable, can't deny that.
There's a certain calm from the slow, less direct activity of browsing forums.
Discord servers are useful, but feel comparatively frantic, impatient and anxious. People often get pushy expecting instant answers, and on the flip side you have people getting mad when you ask a question because they feel obligated to respond immediately. And then the bots, good grief...Even with the live forums on it, it just feels like being in a loud, crowded train station.

It's nice to do this without having to endure Reddit, too!
